  • Frequently asked questions

Here are some common questions about our items.

Yes, for safety and to prevent electric shock hazards to animals, always plug de-icers into a properly grounded GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) protected circuit plug.

Many de-icers are "safe in plastic" when used correctly, often including a protective guard to prevent the heating element from touching the tank walls. Always check the manufacturer's specifications for compatibility with your tank material (plastic, metal, or rubber).

    YES!

Tank de-icer grounding is a crucial safety step, especially for plastic tanks, involving driving a metal ground rod into the earth near the tank and connecting it with bare copper wire to the tank or directly into the water to prevent electric shock to livestock from stray voltage, often done in conjunction with plugging the de-icer into a GFCI outlet for enhanced protection. This setup creates a safe path for electricity to travel into the ground if the de-icer malfunctions, safeguarding animals that might otherwise receive a dangerous shock.

How to ground a stock Tank when using a Tank De-Icer

  1. Gather Materials: BUY THIS KIT. It has everything you need. Rod, Clamp, copper wire.
  2. Install Ground Rod: Drive the rod into the ground near the tank, away from the animals, leaving only a few inches exposed above the ground.
  3. Connect Wire to Rod: Strip the insulation off 2-4" of both ends of the wire. Using the supplied clamp, securely fasten one end of the copper wire to the ground rod.
  4. Connect to Tank/Water: Drape the wire into the water over the lip of the tank, a heavy rock or brick will help hold the wire at the bottom to ensure good contact with the water.
  5. Use a GFCI Outlet: Always plug the de-icer into a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlet, which detects power leakage and shuts off electricity, providing another layer of safety.
  6. Inspect Regularly: Check the cords, connections, and grounding setup frequently for damage.
